Mexican Independence Day, or Dia de la Independencia, is just around the corner on September 16th. In fact, during the entire month of September, the country of Mexico comes alive in tribute to its Independence Day. You will see the proud Mexican flag displayed all across the country in homes, offices and public spaces with its red, white and green colors honoring this special celebration.

September 16th is the day

The whole month of September is a special time in Mexico, but September 16th is Independence Day, although festivities always commence the day before on September 15h.

The month of September is known as “El Mes de la Patria” in Spanish, which means the month of the homeland in English. Mexicans take incredible pride in their beautiful country and love celebrating Independence Day to pay homage to its rich history, traditions and diverse culture. You can expect every city in Mexico to take part in the festivities. The main celebration will be held in the Zocalo in Mexico City, the main square.

In Puerto Vallarta, you can expect to enjoy parades and parties down on the Malecon and in the Zona Romantica or Old Town area. Why not dress up in red, white and green? You will blend in with the tons of Mexico flags that will be draped across Puerto Vallarta in honor of Independence Day.

Mexican Independence Day in Puerto Vallarta

Do you live in Puerto Vallarta full time or plan to be at your second home this month? If so, get ready because on September 15th, it will be party time in town.

You can guarantee a fun evening on the Malecon if you want to head into town to hear El Grito on September 15th at 11 p.m. The “Viva Mexico!” call is called out three times to celebrate the Grito de la Independencia, which commemorates Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s call for independence back in September of 1810. This iconic moment was what prompted the Mexican people to rise up against the Spanish colonial forces, and reclaim their status as a proud Independent Nation.

The governor of Puerto Vallarta will be on hand shout out a replica of Hidalgo’s cry, and the crowd will respond with “¡Viva México!” The traditional grito takes place before midnight in Puerto Vallarta’s main plaza by the Malecon, and is followed by fireworks and a party that will have you dancing in the street!

The next day on September 16th, you can enjoy watching a civic parade with military and local school bands on hand to demonstrate their patriotism. There will be loads of fiestas and fireworks all throughout town and right on the beach as proud local residents celebrate Mexican Independence Day together.
