The History of the Marigalante
To begin with, the Marigalante Pirate Ship was constructed in 1992. During the years between 1980 and 1987, the non-profit Civil Association “Mar, Hombre y Paz,” carefully built the Marigalante Pirate Ship. The non-profit organization took seven years to create the Marigalante that currently offers one of Puerto Vallarta’s top tours. Completed in 1987, the Marigalante first sailed from Veracruz to Santona in Cantabria, Spain. Next, the pirate ship continued on to Seville. Lastly, the ship traveled to Guadalquivir to deliver 10,000 coins in a wooden chest. Today, the chest is displayed in Seville’s main Cathedral in its “La Antiqua” chapel.

Marigalante’s Journey Around the World

Next, the Marigalante traveled to Japan via the Nao route from Mexico. This route was a way to commemorate 100 years of trading with Mexico. Then, the pirate ship traveled to Ecuador in South America in 1992 using the Cocoa route. Next, the Marigalante Pirate Ship returned to Spain for a 500th anniversary celebration of the discovery of the New World. The Marigalante Pirate Ship traveled through eighty-seven ports and islands around the world. Its voyage covered 52,000 nautical miles (96,304 kilometers), which is equivalent to two and 1/3rd trips around the world. What a journey! In all, the voyage took thirty years to complete.
