Golf in Puerto Vallarta

One of the top attractions that makes Puerto Vallarta one of the number one destinations for a second home or retirement property at the beach is the great golfing.

Puerto Vallarta is without a doubt one of the most important golfing areas in Mexico and, as golf becomes more and more popular, there are thousands of tourists coming to the city in order to take advantage of the great golfing facilities. There are wonderful courses to be found from Marina Vallarta to Riviera Nayarit and they all offer a great game as well as stunning scenery. They are designed to provide a challenging, but manageable, experience for all players whether they are experts or amateurs.

Golf in Puerto Vallarta

The Flamingos Golf resort was the very first course to be built in the Puerto Vallarta area and is challenging in all the right ways. It can be found just north of Nuevo Vallarta and gives golfers the chance to tee off on a championship level course. It is over 6,853 yards long, has narrow-ish fairways and a gentle sloping terrain. What really ups the difficulty level, however, are the 9 water hazards, 43 bunkers, and the cool sea breeze that will ease the heat on your skin, but up the heat on your game! This course also provides transportation to and from your hotels.

Vista Vallarta is a stunning two course complex which overlooks the stunning Banderas Bay and is doing a lot for the popularity of golf in Puerto Vallarta. The Nicklaus course is the more challenging of the two and was used for the PGA World Cup tournament in 2002 (only a year after it opened). This course has gorgeous views of the Sierra Madre mountains and the Bay of Banderas partly due to the fact that it’s the highest part of the property.

The counterpart to the Nicklaus course is the Weiskopf course and it provides a complimentary contrast to its sister course. This Puerto Vallarta golf course is ringed by dense vegetation and deep ravines, and it makes use of the diverse elevations and depressions in the land to create an assortment of varied and challenging bunkers. Both Puerto Vallarta golf courses, however, are on the top 10 list of all the courses in Mexico (according to Golf Digest’s “Planet Golf” rankings. For those who get a kick out of playing courses frequented by pros Vista Vallarta is perfect.

There are, of course, many great courses in and around Puerto Vallarta which are worth a visit. El Tigre, Punta Mita and the Marina Golf course are all great courses; close to the downtown area and all having positively fearsome beach bunkers these courses will put your skills to the test.
