More than ever, homebodies are planting gardens and beginning to grow their own food. Homegrown food is healthier, tastes delicious and saves you money on groceries, too. With plenty of room to spare on spacious Garza Blanca terraces, an upside down tomato planter is a great DIY project. To start, simply make a hole in the bottom of the bucket large enough to push the plant through. Then, fill the bucket with potting soil up to 3 to 5 inches from the top. Next, push in the plant and hang the container from the handle on your hook, bracket or other supporting device. Upside-down tomato planters make a cute addition to any outdoor space, and are functional, too.
Yarn-wrapped painted jars are a fun art project that creates unique jars that you can use for candles or as flowers bases. First, clean and remove all stickers from glass jars. Try soaking the jars in water to quickly remove stubborn stickers so that the jar is smooth to allow for easy paint application. Once dry, take long strings of yarn and wrap around the jar multiple times. Make sure to leave the starting end of the yard open so you can tie it off at the end. Try out different patterns and use varying yarn textures. Tie the ends together once you are done wrapping and cut extra yarn from the knot. Then, take spray paint and spray the outside of the jar evenly including the bottom and inside. After the jar is dry, slowly remove the yarn. The result is a unique and pretty handmade designed jar.
Many people enjoy bird watching. There is nothing like catching a glimpse of a beautiful bird or enjoying its cheerful song that can quickly brighten your day. You can use recycled materials to reuse leftover items you already have at home to create a simple bird feeder. To make a recycled bird feeder, start by using a thumbtack to poke 2 holes in a plastic bottle. Make sure the holes are directly across from one another on opposite sides near the bottom of the bottle. Then, carefully widen the holes with a pair of scissors and insert a dowel rod, pencil, or wooden chopstick through the holes to create a perch. Add a ribbon or string to the top of the bottle and tie it to your favorite tree or windowsill.
Leaf print stepping stones can easily be made in one afternoon and barely cost anything to make. A thrifty garden DIY project, your kids will love helping you with this one. To begin, find a round lid that is an inch or two deep and about 6-8 inches wide. Then, mix concrete according to instructions, and pour mixture into the lid/mold. Next, use a trowel to smooth out the concrete and remove any air bubbles. Spray the back of the leaf with cooking oil and press firmly into the concrete before it hardens. The best leaves to use are flat, strong, and have thick veins. Firmly press the back of the leaf where the veins are directly into the concrete for the best impression. Next, cover with a plastic drop cloth and let dry for 24 hours. Once dry, carefully remove the leaf and stepping stone from the mold.
While the holidays are still half a year away, why not make your own baked salt dough ornaments? To begin, prepare dough by mixing flour, salt and water. Then, roll out dough and cut out shapes using cookie cutters. You can make figurines, letters or even numbers. Children will love getting creative and making their own designs. Creating individual letters so kids can spell out their own names is a fun idea. Then, use the end of a skewer to poke a hole in the top of each ornament so you can add a string or ribbon later. Bake at 250 degrees for 2-3 hours. Once cooled, tie a pretty ribbon or string through the hole to hang your ornament.
