With the Day of the Dead just around the corner, there are bound to be lots of interesting cultural events and celebrations in Puerto Vallarta. D\u00eda de Los Muertos in Spanish, the Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and also celebrated by people of Mexican heritage wherever they may be living. The multi-day holiday begins on October 31st and culminates on November 2nd. The celebrations are centered around family gatherings that honor and remember friends and family members who have passed away. The creation of altars and displays are believed to help support them on their spiritual journey in the beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n

D\u00eda De Los Muertos History<\/b><\/h2>\n

Many people may not realize it, but D\u00eda De Los Muertos actually took place during the summer prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. <\/span>Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico stem from ancient pre-Columbian traditions. Rituals honoring the deaths of ancestors have been observed by these civilizations for as long as 2,500\u20133,000 years. <\/span>The influence of the Spanish conquistadors influenced an adjustment in the timing of the celebration and it began to be practiced in late October and early November, specifically on October 31, November 1, and November 2 to mirror \u00a0Western Christianity traditions of Allhallowtide which included All Saints Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. <\/span><\/p>\n

D\u00eda de Los Muertos Practices and Customs<\/b><\/h2>\n

Today, D\u00eda de Los Muertos is a time for families and friends to come together and honor their loved ones who have passed on. The intricate building of private altars which are called ofrendas, are designed to honor the deceased. Altars are often decorated with calaveras \u00a0or skulls, aztec marigold flowers, and of course the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Beautiful candles are placed on the altar and lit as you pay your respects to those who have gone on before us. Many people that our loved ones come back to visit us on this magical night, and share in the celebrations with family and friends. A photo or photos of the loved one is placed on the altar, and family members also leave prized possessions of the deceased at the grave sites. <\/span><\/p>\n

Puerto Vallarta: Fiesta en la Calle<\/b><\/h2>\n

In Puerto Vallarta, you can also find celebrations around town celebrating D\u00eda de los Muertos. One of the most popular events is Fiesta en la Calle which is located near Los Muertos Brewing Company on Lazaro Cardenas and Calle Constituci\u00f3n. A fun and energetic event including live music and food specials is celebrating is 6th annual Fiesta en la Calle this year on Saturday, November 3rd, 2018. \u00a0Starting at 1pm, there will be live entertainment throughout the day until 11pm. A lively and exciting day, it will be an excellent opportunity to enjoy taking part in this unique and culturally significant tradition that Mexico is known for.<\/span><\/p>\n
