When you emigrate for a new job you’re doing the brave (and perhaps scary) thing of combining all three of these at once. Retiring abroad can also be a time of upheaval but we can assure you that starting a new life in Mexico will be one of the most rewarding things you will do.

Nevertheless, with any major change in your life, it is always wise to seek advice and take careful steps towards successful emigration. Below you will find some great tips to help you when starting a new life in Mexico.

Have a plan yet be open to change

When you make any really big changes—such as starting a new life in Mexico—it is best to have a plan to guide you on your way. Make sure that your plan is flexible enough to change if your situation evolves, but strong enough to keep you on track if you begin to lose motivation or direction. A plan should not hinder you by cutting you away from organic growth, but it should be strong enough to guide you where needed. Remember all plans are works in progress and that changing them when needed is never a failure!

Networking your new life in Mexico

Networking is one of the most important things you can do when you arrive at a new place; you should begin making ties with the people around you as soon as possible! Join the local gym, introduce yourself to your neighbors, and talk to people at work! You could even join an expat Facebook group, but make sure you talk to the locals too! Mexico is a great place for networking; you will find the local people are super friendly too.

Financial security

Make sure you have saved some “rainy day” money in case you have an emergency. You may not (and hopeful you won’t) need this money, but it will certainly help to keep you calm if things do go different as planned! Arriving in a new place tends to be more expensive than you expect it to be, and you’re likely to spend a little more on socializing than you usually would at the beginning as you find your favorite restaurants etc. Plus, it takes time to find the right mechanic, plumber, electrician for you… Having a safety net when starting a new life in Mexico is never a bad thing!

Patience is a virtue

A new life in any foreign land will takes its toll on you to begin with; it’s likely that a lot of small things will be different in ways that you never anticipated. The Mexican lifestyle differs from the way of things in the USA and Canada in many ways; it’s a little less frenetic for a start. Patience is the first rule! A soft approach is key to getting ahead when you’re new to an area; getting irate will only harm your cause.

Hablas español?

It’s not essential to speak Spanish when starting a new life in Mexico, as many people in Mexico are bilingual to some degree, but having a basic grasp of the country’s language will certainly help you to connect with your neighbors and work mates. If you already have a basic understanding of the language you’ll find that it grows with use, but if you don’t know any you will find plenty of affordable classes in most of the areas you go to. After all, knowing the lingo will only help you to settle in.

Do you have any tips for settling into a new life in Mexico? If you’ve made the move yourself and you have tips to share you can let us know in the comments section.

If we had to pick the three most stressful things you can do in life they would undoubtedly be; moving house, moving country, and changing jobs.
