You have decided that a move to Mexico is the ideal next step for your life, so how do you actually make it happen? There are countless reasons to relocate to this wonderful country such as adventure calling, being offered an amazing job, planning to start your own business or feeling ready to retire somewhere warm to name just a few. With so many things to coordinate before moving, it is important to have a plan so you accomplish all you need to before embarking on your new journey in Mexico. Here are some of the most essential aspects to consider before your big move.
At the top of the list for good reason because without a passport and visa, your travel to Mexico won’t be possible. Make sure you (and anyone moving with you) have a current passport and that you have applied for your visa to live and work in Mexico, if needed. You can contact your local Mexican Consulate regarding any forms you will need to complete and any included fees. You should also gather important documents you might need to take such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas, etc.
This is a big one, and depends largely on your personal circumstances. If you don’t foresee this as a permanent move, you might want to leave any large items behind by selling them or putting them in storage and take just the bare essentials like clothing. You can find plenty of furnished rentals in Mexico, or go with a plan to purchase whatever you need once you get there. If you do leave your things in storage, you can always decide to move them at a later time once you are more settled. However, if you are sure this is it, you can hire a moving company to transport all of your things for peace of mind and far fewer headaches than doing it yourself.
If you own a vehicle and live in the Americas, you need to decide whether it makes sense to take it with you, sell it or store it. Depending on where you are moving within Mexico, you may find that life can be quite liberating without a vehicle to worry about! If you are driving to your destination, make sure your vehicle is serviced and properly equipped for the journey.
If driving is out of the question, flying is generally the easiest and fastest means to get to Mexico.
First off, you need to deal with your housing in your current home country, so that means giving notice you are moving out if you rent or deciding what to do with your home if you own one (sell it, rent it out, or leave it vacant). You will also need to secure housing in Mexico, so start your search for an apartment or house as you soon as you know you’ll be moving.
If you have kids, you will want to research some private schools where you will be moving and plan to tour a few once you arrive to decide which one is the best fit for your family. Before moving from your current home, you will need to arrange for their last day of school (if it’s mid-year), pick up their transcripts/report cards, and notify any sports teams or clubs they take part in that they will be moving away.
Taking your pet along is definitely possible, as long as it has all of its necessary shots and a health certificate from a licensed veterinarian. Pets other than cats and dogs require special import permits.
You may consider simplifying any financial aspects in your home country such as closing bank accounts or canceling unnecessary credit cards. Also, find out which banks, if any, your bank at home is affiliated with in Mexico. Often, you can avoid extra fees when using their ATMs, etc.
Make sure you pay any pending bills and close accounts as needed with companies that provide your utilities, cell phone service, cable and internet, health or car insurance, newspapers, magazines, gym memberships, associations you are a member of, etc.
