Did know that you can find some of Mexico’s most diverse flora and fauna in Puerto Vallarta? The lush vegetation of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains is home to a plethora of wildlife and plant life that makes the region naturally stunning. As a result, more and more foreigners are deciding to invest in Puerto Vallarta real estate and purchase a second home or retirement home in the area.

One of the top choices for beachfront residences are found at the Garza Blanca exclusive residential real estate community just south of downtown Puerto Vallarta.

Read below to learn more about the flora and fauna in Puerto Vallarta, and why it makes Puerto Vallarta stand out as a tourist destination and an ideal spot for buying a second home in paradise.

Biodiverse Flora and Fauna in Puerto Vallarta

The tropical climate of the region plays a large role in the vast biodiversity found in the flora and fauna in Puerto Vallarta.

The combination of plentiful rain during the summer months combined with the sea, sun and humidity creates an ideal environment for a wide variety of animal and plant life. The Sierra Madre Occidental mountains that embrace the Banderas Bay where it meets the ocean waters are the perfect tropical canopy to provide a home for many jungle inhabitants.

A tropical climate is critical when it comes to stimulating and supporting Puerto Vallarta’s biodiversity and ecology. Covered by a thick jungle where it meets the Pacific Ocean, the Sierra Madre Occidental comes all the way down to the water’s edge just south of town making the beach towns and coastal villages only accessible by boat. There are over 40 kilometers of mountains, rivers, coasts and beaches in the Banderas Bay region which promotes a wide variety of flora and fauna in Puerto Vallarta making it one of the most important biodiverse areas in all of Latin America.

Visit Botanical Gardens

A great place to appreciate the abundant and diverse flora and fauna in Puerto Vallarta is at the Vallarta Botanical Garden, located just 20 minutes south of the Garza Blanca exclusive residential real estate community.

The Vallarta Botanical Garden is a natural park open to the public where visitors can enjoy seeing and learning about more than 3,000 species that inhabit the region, as well as an impressive orchid nursery that contains more than 100 different species.

Take time to schedule a visit to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens where you can enjoy touring the gardens and make sure to take time to walk down to the fresh river below. It is an ideal spot for cooling off on a hot summer day and you can even bring along a picnic and enjoy lunch al fresco.

If you’d rather eat inside, there is a delicious onsite restaurant that offers Mexican cuisine and incredible views as well. Do you love eating tropical fruits that grow so easily in Puerto Vallarta’s climate? If so, you will love to learn that the area is known for a wide variety of tropical fruits including coconuts, guamuchiles, mangos, guavas, yaka, and avocados.

Local Birds, Animals, Fish and Reptiles

As expected in a tropical paradise like Puerto Vallarta, the area is home to a wide variety of bird species including the Mexican Cacique, Copete Magpie, Yellow Chest and the Blue-fronted Alcatraz.

The expansive Banderas Bay and connecting Pacific Ocean waters make Puerto Vallarta an ideal location for marine diversity as well. In addition to wild birds, there are many fish species that inhabit Banderas Bay and find protection in its calming waters.

Popular fish found in the area include the blue marlin, black marlin, snapper, sailfish, tuna and croaker.  Snorkeling or scuba diving in the area, especially around the famed Los Arcos de Mismaloya just south of Villa La Estancia Preserve offers visitors and local residents an excellent chance to see these amazing creatures up close and personal.

The lush Sierra Madre jungle and rainforest offers food and shelter for a variety of unique and interesting animals including the nine band armadillo, the nocturnal badger, the white-nosed coati, jaguars, ocelots, tigrillos and jaguarundis. There is also a large variety of reptiles including green iguanas, spiny-tailed iguanas, the enchaquetado lizard, mottled Mexican lizard, acaltetepon, crocodiles and many different species of snakes.

Dolphins, Sea Turtles and Whales

Out at sea, playful dolphins can regularly be seen jumping and putting on a show when individuals are cruising the Banderas Bay by boat. Bottlenose dolphins, spotted dolphins, and spinner dolphins are the most prevalent species of dolphins that inhabit the area.

In addition to dolphins, sea turtles regularly return to the shores to lay their eggs before heading out to sea once again. The 5 most common species of turtles found in the Banderas Bay are the olive ridley turtle, the delicate leatherback turtle, the green turtle and the hawksbill turtle. Each of these turtles regularly visit the coast of Puerto Vallarta and are protected to help ensure their survival.

If you haven’t done so already, you can even be part of a conservation effort that releases baby sea turtles back to sea after they have safely hatched. Also, each winter brings about the amazing return of humpback whales who migrate to the area each winter between the months of December through April to birth and nurture their young in the warm waters of Banderas Bay.  In addition to Banderas Bay, Humpback whales also regularly migrate to two other areas in the world including the Revillagigedo Islands and Hawaii.

As you can see, Puerto Vallarta is home to incredible biodiversity, and it is worth mentioning the importance of always respecting and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.
