Continue reading below to learn more about famed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and why you should attend the “Spirit of Frida” exhibition at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens coming up on November 1st.
Kahlo was a Mexican painter that has been described as a surrealist or magical realist. She is well known for her many portraits and self-portraits that were Inspired by the country’s popular culture and folk art as well. She explored questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society through her works of art. Many of her paintings contain strong autobiographical elements and she was a master at mixing realism with fantastical elements. She was also involved in the post-revolutionary Mexicayotl movement, which was aimed at creating a Mexican identity.
Kahlo’s father was German and her mother was Mexican mestiza. Kahlo spent most of her childhood and adult life at La Casa Azul, which was her family home in Coyoacán in Mexico City. Today, her former home has been converted into the Frida Kahlo Museum and is definitely worth a visit. Disabled by polio as a child, Kahlo was also an intelligent student who planned to attend medical school until a traffic accident at age eighteen inflicted serious injuries that contributed to serious pain and continued health issues. As she recovered from the accident, she began painting again and her childhood passion for art was reignited and an artist was born.
As a young woman, Kahlo became interested in politics which led her to join the Mexican Communist Party in 1927.
At that time, she met fellow Mexican artist Diego Rivera and the couple married in 1928. Together, they spent the late 1920’s and early 1930’s travelling throughout Mexico and the United States where she further developed her artistic skills and style. Her main inspiration was drawn from Mexican folk culture, and the majority of her paintings were small self-portraits that also blended pre-Columbian and Catholic beliefs. Her works intrigued Surrealist artist André Breton, who was responsible for organizing Kahlo’s first solo exhibition in New York at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1938.
Did you know that Kahlo’s fame as an artist didn’t occur until the late 1970’s when her work was rediscovered by both art historians and political activists? A few decades later in the early 1990’s, she had become a recognized figure in art history, as well as a world renown icon for Chicanos, feminists and the LGBT movement.
Today, Kahlo’s work is celebrated internationally as a representation of Mexican national and indigenous traditions. Art lovers appreciate and admire Kahlo’s unique depiction of the female experience and form.
