If you are one of those people lucky enough to have already seen dolphins in the wild you will already know what charming, happy, and stunning creatures they are in their natural habitat. These animals are the embodiment of what the freedom of the ocean should look like; they are most joyful when free, and most friendly when they are happy. Unlike the unfortunate members of their species who have been trapped and kept in small tanks to perform all day, wild dolphins are free from the discomfort and stress that captivity causes. This means that your encounters with them are more natural, organic, and very much on the terms of the dolphins.
Puerto Vallarta is perfectly placed on the shores of the stunning Banderas Bay where wild bottlenose dolphins can often be found. Here, you can find companies that will guide you through an encounter with a wild pod of dolphins; this is an experience you can treasure forever, but also one which is ethical and sustainable. In these kinds of eco-friendly tours, a professional team will guide you, which generally includes a trained marine biologist and a wildlife photographer, amongst others.
One such company in Puerto Vallarta offer wild dolphin tours is the Wildlife Connection. This company has been involved in ongoing research (surrounding the resident bottlenose pod) since 1998, and when you head out onto the water with them you will have the privilege of participating in this research. Simply by signing up for this tour you will be helping the biologists of Wildlife Connection to further their research and gain a greater understanding of the dolphin population and how to protect them!
Each outing sees around 12 to 14 people taken on a personalized tour on a shaded boat which allows you to approach the dolphins without disrupting them too much. These boats have a hydrophone on board so you can listen to the dolphins as well! While no tour can confirm you will swim with wild dolphins (as with all wild animal it depends on their mood, and the size of the group), they do guarantee that you will see them up close!
Bottlenose dolphins are the highlight of the tour, but other marine wildlife also makes an appearance now and then. You may see spotted dolphins, or (between December and March) even humpback whales, giant mantas, sea turtles, spinner dolphins and orcas.
Young dolphins, in particular, are extremely curious so if you come across some juveniles you’re guaranteed a great experience; they love to interact with new people!
These tours take place all year long and leave daily with a bilingual guide on board who specializes in the study of dolphins. This educational tour will leave you more knowledgeable, and hopefully passionate, about these incredible and beautiful animals! The tours last around 3 ½ hours and include a light breakfast, snacks, bottled water, and soft drinks; between December and March the tours also include lunch. People of all ages and abilities are welcome on board these ships!
