When it comes down to it, what everyone really wants is to be happy; the rest is window-dressing. The “happy factor” is king, especially when choosing somewhere to purchase real estate.
In Mexico it’s all about happiness; this country is not only one of the most desirable vacation destinations in the world, but is one of the happiest places in the world when it comes to its own nationals! The people of Mexico are by and large happier, healthier, and longer-lived than many of the world’s biggest economies, and that’s no small feat!
According to Mexico News Daily, Mexico is, in fact, second in the world when it comes to overall happiness; Costa Rica took the number one spot. Mexico News Daily created its article using stats from Gallup, the Happy Planet Index, New Economics Foundation, and World Happiness Report. The interesting thing is that Mexico outperformed some of the biggest economies in the world, including the USA whose economy is five times larger than Mexico’s, to take the number two spot. Clearly, money isn’t everything!
The other possible reasons for Mexico’s success as one of the happiest places are listed below:
Wellbeing is an umbrella term that refers to the general health, happiness, and comfort of a person, and these days it’s a hot topic. The thing is, Mexicans have had wellbeing in mind for a long, long time. Generally speaking, Mexicans eat well, balance their lives, and celebrate their successes before focusing on the negative events and effects in their lives. The result is a people who are happier and more content, even if they are, by most North American standards, poorer than their northern neighbours.
The affordability of health care and the good diet which most Mexican benefit from have left the country with a healthy average life expectancy of 76 years! Long and healthy lives are the norm here, and there’s no doubt that the more laid back atmosphere has a lot to do with this; stress is a silent killer, and Mexicans are good at avoiding it, where they can!
It’s not just private health care that’s affordable in Mexico; housing, utilities, food, drink, and luxuries are all cheaper here, on average, than across the border. The result of this is that even on a modest income people can live well and indulge a little; people stress less about money, too, and so they’re happier and healthier.
This could have something to do with the less prosperity-centric outlook that Mexicans foster, or at least the slightly different meaning this word has for Mexicans; prosperity can be as much about friends and family as money.
The lifestyle here is, as we have noted, different, but in particular it is slower than you may have been used to. This can be frustrating if you’re in a rush, or you’re a busy kind of person, but it’s beneficial overall. Knowing when to kick back and relax is so important to wellbeing and happiness. The fact that most Mexicans work a six day week doesn’t stop them from celebrating and having a good time, and this work-life balance is a big part of their lifestyle, and, we suspect, their happiness.
